Sri Kurmam is situated in Srikakulam District and not far off from the town. Sri Kurmam means - holy tortoise. Lord Vishnu took birth as Kurmam to churn the seas and with a view to help both Gods and demons to bring up holy items from the sea. This is according to the Puranaas of Hinduism and the description is more fully done by the Government of A.P in the write up which is also photographed and presented for the benefit of readers. This trip is undertaken during the month of February 2014.
It is really great the Government has taken all steps to protect particularly the star tortoises by providing a protected shelter in the temple complex supervised by experienced Veterinary Doctors.
One more interesting thing which I noticed is a temple tank in the complex. I understand that the bones submerged in the waters of the tank (as per Hindu religious custom) gets diluted in the waters. The secret of this is still not known as is informed to me by the local people.
